This is our third month in Eastern Europe. As a pioneer month, we were able to discuss ministry locations as a team or seek out new contacts.  Several of us entertained the idea of Croatia, which many consider a hidden paradise.  At the time, this opportunity seemed unlikely, only a dream!  There were also very few people we could find to contact about doing mission work in Croatia.

Yet everything seemed to fall into place smoothly and quickly, and excitement ran high!  Other teams were going to Germany, Hungary, and Slovakia.  Our missionary contact was located in Split, Croatia, a large city that borders the Adriatic Sea!  Ministry would include working at a café, construction or repairs, street evangelism, etc.  Seemed to usFrom sarahdiederich.theworldrace.org to be the perfect place for our longest month of ministry!

The country of Croatia has suffered through much fighting over boundaries.  Before World War I, Croatia was a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.  Croats, Serbs, and Slovenes created Yugoslavia around 1929.  It wasn’t until 1991 that Croatia proclaimed it’s independence, even then it took over four years of fighting before armies were removed from Croatian lands.  Croatia is about the size of West Virginia and has over 1,000 islands in the Adriatic Sea, 66 of these are inhabited.
