What do candy, yo-yo’s, and Fathers have in common?
They are all June celebrations. Yep, thats right June is National Candy Month, June 6th is National Yo-Yo Day, and of course we all know that Father’s Day is also this time of year.
So, why is any of this important? Well, I’m about to share how YOU can change the world just by celebrating the month of June.
Let’s start with National Candy Month. Have you ever met someone who doesn’t like candy? There are so many different types and flavors of candy, that I bet every person could find at least one that they like. Here are 5 ways that you can enjoy candy and change the world.
- Buy several bags of your favorite candies and donate them to a boys and girls club or a low income childcare.
- Write a letter to your spouse or someone who has made a difference in your life, and list a few reasons why they are a lifesaver. And don’t forget to attach a pack!
- Spend time with your kids or kids you know and make taffy, peanut brittle, or other candy.
- Sponsor a soldier serving overseas, and send him/her a care package with favorite candies, be sure to avoid ones that melt.
- Volunteer at a youth group or children’s group and entertain them with fun candy activities such as guess the flavor of the jelly belly, or candy trivia, or these fun candy bar games.
Kids especially love candy, and what a better way than using candy to spend time with them. Speaking of kids and changing the world, check out what these kids are doing!
Okay, enough with candy. June Celebrations also include National Dairy Month and of course lets not forget Father’s Day.
Personally I love dairy, particularly cheese! Most people eat dairy several times a day. But do you ever consider where that string cheese, glass of milk, or ice cream cone comes from. I was raised on a farm, not a dairy farm, but I have milked cows. This is the month to truly appreciate where our food comes from and the people who work so hard to deliver it. So, be sure to thank a dairy farmer this month.
My father isn’t a dairy farmer, but he is a farmer and he works hard everyday to produce corn, soybeans, and wheat, as well as a herd of beef cattle. So, as we celebrate the month of June, I will definitely be celebrating my dad as well!
Here’s a few ideas for celebrating the dad in your life.
- Mow his grass and fix up his yard.
- Take him on a fishing trip.
- Buy him tickets to see his favorite team.
- Maybe your dad would enjoy a game of paintball or tennis (less intense!)
- Take a trip to see where he grew up, and listen to (all!) his stories.
- Check out a car show, or other type of show/festival he would enjoy.
And here are a few ideas for using Fathers Day to change the world.
- Give a gift through Heifer International to help empower a dad to care for his family.
- Make cards to give to dads at a soup kitchen or food pantry.
- Visit a nursing home and ask about dads that don’t receive many visitors.
- Write a letter of appreciation to a man who has made a difference in your life.
- Volunteer with dad at a Habitat for Humanity project.
