October is Poppin’ Popcorn Month!! Popcorn just happens to be my FAVORITE snack! I could eat it all day and love the variety, although I am perfectly happy with a bowl of air popped, spray buttered, and salted popcorn.
Popcorn is pretty amazing. For more than just a few reasons, and guess what it can help change the world!
First some fun popcorn facts!
- Americans consume some 16 billion quarts of this treat. That’s 51 quarts per person a year. Yikes, I probably consume twice that!
- Each kernel has a tiny drop of water, which when heated causes the kernel to ‘POP’.
- Microwave popcorn was the very first use of microwave heating in the 1940s.
- The world’s largest popcorn ball was created by volunteers in Sac City, Iowa in February, 2009. It weighed 5,000 lbs., stood over 8 ft. tall, and measured 28.8 ft. in circumference.
- It is believed that the first use of wild and early cultivated corn was popping.
Now, ideas for changing the world with popcorn!
- Host a movie and popcorn event at a boys and girls club.
- Plan a game night with your family and enjoy popcorn.
- Make your favorite popcorn recipe and take bags of it to those that are homebound.
- Invite all of your friends, family, or your church to each make a popcorn recipe for a fundraising event. Then everyone votes on their favorite by putting money in jars. Money raised can be donated to hunger fighting organization.
