Clear, blue sky scattered with wisps of fluffy cotton clouds. A dirt path lined with rocks with a handful of trees covered in green leafy branches. Overlooking a blue lake glistening in the rays of sunshine. The sounds of birds and insects fluttering through the warm, but cool breeze. The spontaneous racket created by monkeys playing on the branches and jumping from tree to tree. The excitement of a possible hippo sighting. A glimpse of paradise! My team, Transformers and Team Aletheia encounter this glimpse every day. The beauty that surrounds us continually amazes me.
We have been blessed abundantly during our time here in Mbita, Kenya. We are staying at a “camp” called SEEK-Suba Environment Education of Kenya. Our hosts Paul and Erin are extremely generous and hospitable. Several of the staff have been traveling with us to help with translation and ministry activities. All of these people have become part of our family and we have so much fun together. There is much laughter and joking around.
We walk almost everywhere we go, usually around 2-3 miles a day, sometimes more. The town is a 30-minute walk from the base. So we have definitely been getting our exercise in! The food has been excellent, which surprises me because I am such a picky eater. Breakfast consists of bread, jam, peanut butter, and bananas most mornings. Sometimes Erin will fix us pancakes or oatmeal, which is a real treat!! Lunch and dinner ranges from rice/ beans to chipoti/greengrams (my favorite) to spaghetti to ugali/beef stew.
Ministry has included a variety of activities. The first week was mostly spent helping on the base: weeding/mulching the garden, cleaning, helping in the kitchen, etc. We also planted trees at the hospital and prayed for the sick. The second week, we held two crusades at two different fisherman beaches. We sang/danced, shared testimony, and performed our drama. One day, we drove to an orphanage to learn about their program and sang/danced with the kids. There have been two youth rallies, where we were given the opportunity to plan and participate in. This week we have visited many homes to share our testimony and to encourage believers and widows.
