Bordering the Indian Ocean, Kenya is a small country in Africa. It has around 40 ethnic groups, with each group speaking a variety of the mother tongue. Kenyans tend to be more community oriented instead of individualistic, relying on mutual responsibility and assistance.

Kenya, Africa                                                                      Kenya, Africa

The items in February’s Box of Blessings all come from the fair trade group – Jedando African Handicrafts in Kenya. This artisan group works mainly with wood and bone; carving with very primitive hand tools. The carving trade is passed on to the next generation starting at a very young age.

Handcarved salad tongs

The twisted salad servers are made using one piece of wood. The handles are carved in such a way to make it look like several pieces of wood are twisted together. These are such a neat way to serve your salads and great conversation piece when hosting guests. Sharing the story of the carvers in Kenya who are working to provide for themselves and their families.

Bone Bracelet Kenya                                                                   Bone Bracelet Kenya

The bone bracelet is made with bone and beads that are strung onto elastic for a one size fits all fit. They come in a variety of traditional Kenyan designs.  This style goes well with a lot of different outfits and events. Most of the designs are gender mutual and can be worn by the male population as well.

Bone Spreader Kenya

The small bone spreader is handcarved from bone and has a designed handle using the batik process. This process puts wax on the white bone, which is dipped into a black or brown dye then swirled to make unique designs.

Cause of the month for February went to Food for the Hungry in deworming 1,500 children. The treatments given keep these children protected for up to 6 months.  Worms are caused by dirty water and poor hygiene. In addition to the medical treatments, Food for the Hungry trains parents and community leaders how to eliminate parasites from the water system, and to have the children wear shoes so they don’t contract worms from cuts on their feet.
